A Surf Landing Like No Other

Our landing at St Andrews Bay, South Georgia, was raw and exhilarating. As the Zodiac pushed through the cold surf, we were immediately greeted by massive southern elephant seals sprawled across the black-sand beach. Towering above them stood thousands of king penguins, with their striking orange-and-gold markings glowing in the early morning light.

Golden Light and Penguin Shadows

This was not our first landing at St Andrews but it was surely the most magnificent. The golden hour had arrived just as we stepped onto shore, casting long penguin shadows across the beach. The air was cool but alive with sound—millions of penguin calls creating a wall of noise that echoed off the surrounding glaciers and peaks. It was the sound of life at its fullest.

Inside the Largest King Penguin Colony in South Georgia

St Andrews Bay is home to an estimated 250,000 breeding pairs of king penguins. This makes it the largest colony of king penguins on South Georgia Island—and perhaps the largest on the planet. Walking among them (at a respectful distance), we were awestruck by their sheer numbers and their synchronized movements.

Each king penguin emits a unique call used to recognize mates and chicks among the crowd. Their vocalizations combined with the physical scale of the colony create a sensory overload that is impossible to forget.

The Kiwi fruit of South Georgia - Fluffy King Penguin Chicks

A hike up to the lookout above the colony rewarded us with a panoramic view of this vast ecosystem. From above, the mass of penguins formed a shimmering, moving mosaic of black, white, orange, and brown. The brown figures? These were the king penguin chicks, appearing somewhat like extraordinarily large Kiwi fruit with their fluffy down coats of feathers. Unlike other penguin species, king penguins don’t nest. They balance their single egg on their feet under a flap of abdominal skin called a brood pouch. Their chicks take more than a year to fledge—an evolutionary adaptation to the harsh sub-Antarctic climate.
